A Catholic Social Action Leader’s Reflections on the War in Iraq
As our President prepares to make the most important policy address of his presidency, our social action office has prepared some reflections on the war, the surge (or escalation) and the role of people of faith. Throughout the 37 year history of Catholic Social Action in our Diocese, we have consistently addressed matters of war, peace and human rights through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching. These brief reflections are intended to cause a civil dialogue among our parishioners regarding one of the preeminent moral issues of our time. It is the role and responsibility of Catholics to become informed and active in the critical debates confronting our community, state and nation.

Thank you for this thoughtful reflection, Tom. I hope our parish priests would be open to encouraging and promoting civil dialogs on this issue within their parishes. If they would find that too challenging, perhaps they should at least promote your blogspot in the parish bulletins for people who are searching for someone--anyone--who takes seriously the responsibility we have as Catholic Christians to engage with others in the quest for peace through justice. One question I would pose is whether or not we should call the situation in Iraq a war or an occupation, since it seems to me this is not a war in its conventional sense. Maybe someone out there has some insights that could illuminate.

Seven Things Catholics Can Do Regarding the War in Iraq
1. Educate yourself about the teachings of our Church on matters regarding war and peace. Examine the statements of the U.S. Bishops and the Holy See on the war in Iraq. Visit www.usccb.org; www.vatican.va; www.catholic-action.org.
2. Pray daily for the safety of our military personnel, a just end to the war, a peaceful transition for the Iraqi people and a commitment by the international community to assist in the reconstruction of Iraq. (Prayers, liturgy resources, homily suggestions and petitions for general sessions can be found at www.usccb.org. On this web site you can do a search for “prayers for peace.”)
3. Form a study group at your parish (or through your social concerns group) and utilize the resources of the Diocesan Social Action Office for prayer, study and action. Call 888-620-5280 to order a parish resource packet.
4. Organize a prayer service and issue a call for fasting at your parish for the cause of peace. The U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy has resources @ www.usccb.org/liturgy/ashwednesday.shtml
5. Consider traveling to Washington on March 16, 2007 to participate in the Christian Witness for Iraq. For details, visit www.christianpeacewitness.org.
6. Organize a letter writing campaign to your Congressional Representative and U.S. Senator and let them know how you feel about the President’s proposed “surge” or escalation of the war. You can send an online message @ www.networklobby.org.
7. Request a copy of the Stations of the Cross of Nonviolent Love. Contact Karen Leith, staff of the Diocesan Education and Training Center for Social Justice @ kpl7@aol.com or 888-620-5280.
